Brought together at the behest of the Emperor's man Hagecius in the aftermath of the Kelley affair (and the predations of several false alchemists and hermeticists), the Servitors of the Crown pose as "undercover security agents" at large at Court. Cosmas takes on the role of a humble old torchbearer, Lucas, an apprentice artist, the rest, civilians dwelling in Golden Lane, the home of most of the offending con men during the 1590s.
