Lóránt: meets with Weston mére and fille, who are under protection of Father Jiri. Jiri gets Jane to hand over the papers, but calls Kelley a con-man.

Santiago and Salih: at Benatky. Santiago plumbs the Resonances of the nascent Hallow (Wonder, Incompleteness, Flood, and Seeing). Salih gives the astronomers (Brahe, Longomantus, the junior Brahes and Kepler) five 9-agains.

Back at court a week post-party: Ernst receives Prince Michael's ambassador, Stephen Szamosközy. He needs to speak with the Emperor. They go to Kunstkammer, where Ambassador presents the Egg. Anselm and Matthieu examine it. Matthieu: elemental fire. Santiago and Salih arrive as Ernst and the Romanians depart.

Earlier that afternoon, Lóránt met with Gans. Talked of the Kelley case. Papers, translate, go to Imperial library for an English dictionary.

Lórant arrives as the three Peregrini are discussing the Egg. Matthieu takes him to the library, because he needs to research the Egg. Santiago and Salih stay with it. Santiago and Salih do Mage Sight; Santiago senses a spirit, and that it is alive. Salih speaks, with Fate: "And it cannot emerge without outside help."

Lóránt translates, Matthieu discovers asbestos. Lóránt touches the egg and is reminded of a book from Gans's library: Paracelsus, with annotations by Michael Maier, alchemist. Quorum is unable to decide what to do; must wait for Emperor anyway.

Later in that week, Ernst calls for a meeting with Gans and the rabbis. Gans invites Lóránt and the Peregrini (to use his Library). Ernst puts it all out there. Gans ushers the rabbis out. While outside, Lóránt looks to the sky and sees... something.

Ernst wants to know how he knew. Gans tries to explain his abilities. Salih decides to show him, bestows Mage Sight on Ernst. Ernst = mind blown. Lóránt also receives Mage Sight, sees broken strands of Fate over the Jewish Quarter. He is concerned, Gans also sees them.

Ernst consults with Ludovic, and Ludovic says by their deeds ye shall know them. Ernst agrees to work with the cabal.

In the library, they find this passage in a copy of Paracelsus.
